Latin music would not be Latin music as we know if it weren´t for the immense musical gifts that came to the New World from Africa. We had the privilege of having Youssou N’Dour here in Chicago a few days ago! Such an amazing, amazing voice and such talent and artistry in his entire ensemble. I was also struck at the melodies and rhythms from the Dominican Republic that might be legacy from Senegal – listen to Youssou’s “Baay Faal“ and then to Juan Luis Guerra’s “Los Mangos Bajitos“. La música latina no sería lo que es sin el inmenso regalo musical del Africa al Nuevo Mundo. ¡Fue un privilegio poder escuchar en vivo a Youssou N’Dour de Senegal aquí en Chicago hace unos días! ¡Qué voz! Y qué gran talento y habilidad de los músicos de su grupo. Me llamó la atención también la familiaridad de algunas melodías y ritmos – me recordaron algunas de la República Dominicana que podrían ser legado de Senegal – escuchen “Baay Faal ” de Youssou y luego “Los mangos bajitos” de Juan Luis Guerra.
