Creole-Choir-of-Cuba

It was a pleasure to visit with Maestra Emilia Díaz, director and co-founder of the celebrated Creole Choir of Cuba.

The choir is formed by ten musicians from Camaguey, Cuba,  all of Haitian descendance. In fact, their name in Cuba is “Grupo Vocal Desendanns”.  They have been sharing their Haitian musical heritage with audiences world-round for nearly twenty years.

Díaz shared insights and stories about the sources of the choir’s music and choreography and how they have developed their versions of beautifully textured a-cappella songs passed on from generation to generation.

Creole Choir of Cuba will perform at Old Town School of Folk Music onMarch 13.
