Andy Palacios, Belize´s cultural amabassador and major proponent of Garifuna music, remains in critical condition. See news. The Garifuna people extend throughout the Atlantic coast of Belize to Nicaraguna, and are the descendants o a 17th-century slave shipwreck off the Honduran coast and a cultural fusion with welcoming Arawak Indians. The music is a glorious reflection of the point where African culture merged with Amerindian culture – one of the styles of Garifuna music is parranda, the Spanish word for party, and the music is sung in Garifuna language, mixed sometimes with Spanish or English. Listen to Santo Negro by another Garifuna artist, Aurelio Martinez. Andy’s 2007 album Watina won numerous accolades and he was named World Music Artist of the 2007 at WOMEX. We hope for the best for Andy. We hope for the best, and Andy is in our thoughts.
