Yesterday we had the wonderful opportunity to hear Alvin Medina on the cuatro here in Chicago. He´s an incredible virtuoso on this instrument, which is the island´s national instrument. We witnessed his inmense talents not only expressed in traditinal songs such as “Tierra de mis Amores” but also in his very succesful efforts to adapt classical melodies so that they can be interpreted on the cuatro, as in for example, this prelude by his favorite composer, J.S. Bach, which was originally composed for the cello. I was also greatly impressed by his gentle and sincere interaction with public. I was told that he had gone through “some trouble” but had overcome it, and Alvin himself said on stage that everything can be overcome with “God, time, and the clarity of music”. Alvin performed as part of the series La Peña at Old Town. Don´t miss these concerts, they always showcase the best of our musica.
