A few years back in New York City, I attended Mark de Clive-Lowe‘s CHURCH. Despite its heady, cerebral underpinnings – there is no doubt an exquisitely tuned musical intelligence guiding the rhythmic concoctions being created live – I am here to witness it is a soulful, irresistibly danceable experience like no other. CHURCH is Mark de Clive-Lowe’s jazz club-meets the dancefloor plus live remix experimental club night. De Clive-Lowe, aka MdCL, is an avant-garde pianist/musician/producer/live remixer/composer who started the CHURCH project in L.A. in 2010. Since then, CHURCH has been in residence in both that city and New York City, creating spaces to experience MdCL’s signature blending of jazz, electronica and club music.
CHURCH features an ever-evolving roster of artists that have included in the past Kamasi Washington, Jose James, Questlove, and others. Tonight is the inaugural CHURCH Chicago session, and MdCL will be accompanied by some of Chicago’s finest musicians for his live set. Can I hear a musical Amen?
